The face maul. I first officially learned this from working with Jeet Kune Do’s Tim Tackett. 1990s. Tim learned it from Bert Poe, a Marine Raider, Korean War vet, who learned it from the old Marine Corp Raider, Hand-to-Hand Combat Course. It’s a mainstay in my Survival Centric: Hand course. In the Level 2 Palm Strike Module.

(Bert was also an Arizona Ranger. Tim use to say he was a “Texas Ranger,” but it was Arizona (their version). Bert was a savage in the Insosanto Family.)

You palm strike the face but “glue” on to the face and finger maul it. One or two hands. In class, I introduced a replicated-practiced safe version by mauling your training partner’s shoulder instead, and one imagines this upon one’s face. The receiver immediately knows what a ripping mess that would make of his face. Damage the eyes to a level legally justified and explainable.

This may not “win” the fight, but whatever slick willy move that guy was thinking of doing to you? He probably stopped thinking about it. Their first reflexive response is to grab your hand-wrist to make the mauling stop. Be prepared for the grab. Prep releases, etc.

Some people in the last few decades act like they invented this, and maybe in their own minds they did? It’s like what Dave Spaulding of Combat Handguns likes to say, “It’s not new, it’s just new to you.”
